Has anyone resurfaced side housings without sending it off to get lapped? If so, I want to know how and with what results.
All input will be greatly appreciated.

They take off the stationary gears and rub the side housings together, using valve grinding compund. It works well.

Intresting idea Ace, never would have thought of doing it. I take it you've done it?
I used to polish various parts with toothpaste.....

Cool once I get to the point that I rebuild one of these things, I'll give that a shot.
Kinda scared to do it tho, figure a rebuild kit is just shy of what it costs to have one done or at least done cheaply. Still I'd like to try my hand at it.
Plus I'd try to avoid buying a cheap rebuild and pay the extra for Mazdatrix as they know what they're doing and will stand behind their work.

That is a good idea of rubbing the plates together but how much is enough? I was reading up on lapping and it is basically done with a very flat iron plate and lapping compund and moving it in a figure 8. The lapping machines work on the same principle. On the same lines, the FSM says to clean surface with extra fine emery paper. What grit size would that be, 800?..1200?

I figure I can do it, it's just a lot of cash to toss at something. I've rebuilt VW engines and a Cummins NTC800 diesel before so I've done that sort of work.
Something I REALLY want to try but it's just one of those things ya know?
Incidentally, rebuilding one of those big Cummins diesels is one of the easiest things in the world, save for removing the crank. That's one BIG freaking crank.

The rotary is pretty easy to do. The key is to make sure that you prepare everything properly.
