mazdadrifter i dont know why youre talking about parts interchanging. hes just asking if he can take a complete s4 motor and maybe trans and drop them into an s5 na, plug it in and make it work.
putting s4 into s4 car is hard, you end up with no cas wires! it could be done but its the hardest one to do

If you are using a s4 ECU and want to leave the s5 dash harness in place...it won't work. The s4 ecu won't control the s5 instruments/dash etc...

The EASIEST, yet little more expensive alternative is to go standalone. Trying to make the s4 ecu work w/ the s5 dash flawlessly will be a HUGE headache...

Even if he goes standalone, he is still left with an instrument cluster that wont work. I have the tach and speedo, thats it. The standalone will make the cluster work as well as the S4 ECU.
