well, if anyone read my earlier posts about swappin s4 into an s4, i screwed up, i figured i'd get a curve thrown at me https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...1047683664.gif . anyways, to the point. i have my entire- complete 87 Turbo 2 which is wrecked in the front. i have all wiring and such to go with this motor. i have a friend who is going to trade aroudn for the swap stuff and my labor of putting it in. i havent found anyhting that tells how to do this on here or anywhere. i do not want to go stand alone as i want this to be a quick- weeklong, 5-6 hours a day swap. i would like to know what im going to have to do for this as far as wiring the dash and everyhting else. please let me know any and everyhting that you all masterminds know! i have got to have this car done asap due to certain circumstances. PLEASE HELP https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub...IR#>/wacko.png !!! thanks for checkin my post atleast https://www.nopistons.com/forums/pub..._DIR#>/sad.png

bump..... anyone ever done anything with s4 motor into s5?

phinsup 06-24-2004 12:16 PM

I think mazdadrifter did, but I am not sure I'll steer him to the topic, best bet is to go with an aftermarket ECU as far as I know....

Shane.Trammell 06-24-2004 12:17 PM

good luck, there is a lot of difference between wiring for s4 and s5. i would say it would take longer than what you are saying, but im no expert. actually to tell you the truth there is a lot of diff between a lot of stuff on s4 and s5.

is it possible to cut the body harness and repin it to the S4 harness? anyone know where wiring diagrams can be found?

j9fd3s 06-24-2004 12:31 PM

if you look in the wiring diagram its all there

Honestly if time is an issue, I'm thinking that a stand alone would be as quick, if not a little quicker.

Reasons I would go with a stand alone over stock in your scenario.

-standalone comes with it's own wireing diagrahm that is going to be spot on... going from s4 to s5 your going to need two wiring diagrahms you'll be cutting and splicing alot, and your still sort of guessing at some of the wires because they aren't the easiest to depict after 15 years of crud.

-with a standalone you get brand new wireing and grounds, that you are ensured will last a good while if wired correctly = no chance of one of the original grounds coming loose in the swap and costing you hours in wire chasing

- obvious tuning advantages with a stand alone

- probably a warrantee with the ecu and depending on the ecu, customer support to help you get it wired

-standalone let's you simplify your engine bay an incredible amount, getting rid of rat's nest, many solenoids, afm, ect ect

-because of above reason, working on car will be much more simple in the future, you can even check the sensors with your own computer now instead of taking it to mazda and getting codes read

-ability to program your engine to protect itself in case of over heating

-if you want more power later on just bolt it on and tune it up, it's no longer a process of finding a inadequate "piggyback" and band-aid it.

you get my idea

reasons to not go with a stand alone

-cost

-unable to tune your car or no facilites to tune your car

I'm not trying to be a prick, but I honestly think that if you are able to read stock wiring diargrams and have a good working knowledge of how to soder and shrink wrap then you will be able to pull it off with out a hitch.

Just thing of all the stuff you won't have to re-install without the stock ecu, it's a beutiful thing.

mazdadrifter 06-24-2004 01:29 PM

as far as differences

flywheel and/or counterweight are different

bac (idle control) is different

injectors are different impedence

not sure about water temp and air intake temp because i replaced them

your going to have to do something different about the alternator because the s5 is load sensing, and the series 4 is not. I simply just kept my s4 and bolted it up to my s5 block, it's like 10 amps less, but i run mechanical fan and no car amp, so it works like a charm

the stock clutch fan is different, so if you want to run clutch fan, s5 for s5, s4 for s4

obvious differences in intake manfold, excluding where it actually bolts to the block

s5 turbo and s5 manifold are different but, are swappable

turbo oil feed and return lines are different, if you use a s5 turbo on a different motor the feed lines will need to be kept with the turbo.

your going to run into issues with the radiator hoses if you try to keep the s4 radator, I believe you use a s5 upper hose because the neck above the thermostat is at a different angle.

and don't try to use the 3 bolt aluminum thermostat housing on the s5, it will leak. The plastic isn't as tough but will last.

also s4 is mechanical oil metering pump, s5 is electric, so you either have to run premix or find a ecu that will control the omp, it's just a stepping motor.

that's all i can think of for now

I thought that he told me that he is putting all of the engine, drivetrain, ecu and harness from the S4 in to the S5. So no worry about the injectors, altenator, flywheel, etc.... He just doesnt know how to hook the instrument cluster up basically.

I would have to pull apart the dask again and figure out what wires are what, but it is possible, it just may take some time and as long as you have a good multimeter, it should be easy, well, easier.

Shane.Trammell 06-24-2004 05:54 PM

mazdadrifter i dont know why youre talking about parts interchanging. hes just asking if he can take a complete s4 motor and maybe trans and drop them into an s5 na, plug it in and make it work.
