The S5 is more restrictive based on fluid calculations, but it can be mounted in any position.
I didn't notice any difference and I had mine sideways while I was still using an AFM..
Is it really that big a deal?

if anyone is interested in converting their s4 car to a S5 mass air flow sensor , here is the diagram that you need to convert the wiring harness .

It may be a little off topic but, I can't see where an ecu upgrade would be a bad idea at all, expensive; maybe. The technology is fast approaching two decades old on the FC models, not that the old ecu's are bad but, imagine pounding away on a commodore 64 w/ a phone modem, old school style. Not necessarily the way I'd like to browse the internet...

okay, originally posted this half baked potato in the wrong thread. try again:
split the intake pipe (think Y splitter) and stick the AFM on one leg, and a plain old cone filter on the other leg. reduce the spring preload on the AFM so that the door moves easily, then try your mightiest to get the AFM output to actually represent the amount of air sucked through both the cone and the AFM.
oh, and make sure you're trying this on a NA car
split the intake pipe (think Y splitter) and stick the AFM on one leg, and a plain old cone filter on the other leg. reduce the spring preload on the AFM so that the door moves easily, then try your mightiest to get the AFM output to actually represent the amount of air sucked through both the cone and the AFM.
oh, and make sure you're trying this on a NA car

this works, but you have to put a smaller afm in the other side, you have to make the air want to go thru the afm thats plugged in
i'm thinking in terms of an anology to a parallel resistor setup, but fer sure air aint electrons.
