i just now thought about something... the new tranny came out of an 89gxl... my car is an 86... but the 89 had a s4 motor so im thinking the tranny was an s4 too, cuase that tranny looked exactly the same as my original one, only thing that was different was a filler plug on top left side of the one that came out of the 89, my 86 tranny didnt have that filler plug... i mean it seem like it works fine and still has the same problem that my old one did....

but thats not the problem im having. the problem is, when i put the transmission IN my car and bolt it all up and connect everything the tranny will not go into reverse. but when i take the transmission out of my car (laying on the garage floor by itself with shifter intsalled) it WILL go into reverse just fine. i have 2 trannys. they both do the same thing, i guess something is happening thats causing reverse to lock out when they are installed in the car. i really dont want to pull it out again ive already switched the trannys 3 times now. all by myself with no lift. jackstands, a jack and 2 cender blocks is all i have to use. its a bitch. please help if anyone knows ive only been able to drive the car like 4 times cuase of all the problems. I WANT TO DRIVE IT!!!!! lol, thanks

i know man its weird as hell... and i dont get it. i think im just gonna bite the bullet, take the tranny out one more time, get the flywheel machine and inspect my pilot bearing, tho i dont see how that could be problem... could the reverse/5th gear switch lock out reverse... becuase remember my reverse lights come on when i put the car in 5th gear....

just went out and messed with it. i think it might be my nuetral safey switch... its brand new but in the old trans i have sitting in my garage with no nuetral switch i looked in there when i shifted into reverse and theres some linkage that sweeps past the hole when going into reverse that activates the neutral swtich... i think that neutral switch might be messed up or stupid aftermarket crap the threads might be too long and locking it out... when i get off my lazy *** ill go see and let you guys know

At least replace the pilot bearing if you've had the trannies in and out so many times! It's a quick, reliable thing to do...

Anyways, make sure the new clutch is adjusted properly.. switches are electrical, so throw a test light or multimeter on there and check each one, you should be able to find the specs somewhere online. That'll tell you if they are bad, etc.

GO STANDALONE....it will solve a lot of the issues you've brought up here in the forum lately.

I HAVE FOUND THE PROBLEM> HALELUJA.... the stupid new... NEW... nuetral safety switch is off by a little bit... its a little bit too long and stick inside the tranny a little too far and is is blocking the linkage of the reverse gear to go into gear... all i have to do is get a washer or spacer and put it bacvk in.... **** advanced auto parts!
