I know this may seem like an odd combination of a question, but what I really wanted to know is the rx-7 manual transmission built to with stand this kind of abuse?

I know the Supra TT 6sp Getrag trannys are solid, what about the rx-7.

I have heard that the 5 gear synchro is bad on the 3rd gens, how do you fix that, is the an aftermarket synchro that is stronger?

Thanx

3rd gen trannies are very strong. Someone correct me if i'm wrong, but I believe they can hold upwards of 600hp. 5th gear synchro's are notorious for going bad, but has more to do with mis shifts than power.

there is no aftermarket synchro, again it wont break if you dont misshift. the only fix would be to put in a lower over drive gear, or lighten the stock one

The stock tranny is SUPER strong...on the communist forum, ForceFed7(PFS super tuner) runs 9's with a stock tranny.

Mis shifts mess up the 5th gear synchro's. Also, if your worried about stressing the tranny, you can get a lower final gear which will put more stress on the drive axles vs. the tranny. At least they make aftermarket axles for the rx7

you could always get OS gear set, but they are 200,000 yen. Or just learn how to drive and not miss-shift

nah...The gearset's not the problem...it's the synchros. The OS Giken gearset uses the stock synchros...ask Chris

Why not try Jerico Transmissions? If you have the money, call them up and see if they will cut gearsets for you. Having gears made isn't cheap by any means. If you are worried about synchros, get rid of them and go with straight cut gears. They'll take a helluva lot more abuse if you can live with them. They make a lot of noise but don't be fooled, they're doing just fine.

If you are hellbent on taking care of this issue then there is no inexpensive way out. If you don't want to spend a lot, stop slamming your car into gear. Especially 5th gear. That should just be a highway, I'm not racing but trying to save some gas sort of gear. Drivetrain parts last A LOT longer if you just take it easier on them and be smooth when shifting.
