If the 5th and 6th ports arent opening, will it cause a dramatic decrease in acceleration at about 3900 rpm? my 88 gxl will haul *** until it gets to right under 4000 rpms, then it accelerates slowly. what else could cause this???? its completely stock. and i cant find anything on theese threads about this, maybe i overlooked this, but, please help me! im new to these rotary engines. thanks in advance

Yes, inoperable 5th and 5th ports will definitely reduce top end performance. I believe the S4 ('86-'88) aux ports are opened by exhaust backpressure. You'll need to verify that the system is in place and that the actuators are working. The ports get carboned up and need attention in a lot of these cars.

Keep searching, there's bound to be a considerable number of discussions on here.

The actuators themselves can get stuck as well if they are unused for a while like if the car was sitting, so you can either get new ones or try to get them moving again. Its just a matter of taking them off...I had to use contact cleaner or brake cleaner to loosen them up...just cause if you use a lubricant like wd40 they can get stuck again by gumming up. It should take only 2-5psi to get them moving.

But like '88 said if your system is clogged up with **** its not going to work either so making sure its all clear is a must. It's hard to tell if they are actually moving since the system wont work by just revving the car up in neutral...

thanks guys. i took off the linkage from the actuators to see if they were jammed, and the actuator shaft works pretty good. but when i tried to move the part that actually opens the port, it was pretty stuck. i managed to take a screwdriver and a hammer and lightly tap one of them open. but the other one doesnt want to move. is there anyway to get these to loosen up short of tearing apart the top end?

I would also like to add that this car has 213k miles on it and still runs perfect except for this port thing. my uncle owned it since it had 7 miles on it, so i know he took good care of it. but i know it sat up for the last few months if not years of its life. i would imagine all of this could easily cause the ports to stick.

Thats a toughy,

The only way of removing the auxiliary 5th and 6th ports is from inside the intake i'd imagine...looks like you pull off the lower intake and the ports can come out, than the gasket from the motor...

Maybe some penetrating lubricant on the outside and let it sit for a while and than try to work it gently left and right...

This is the way to do it. Be gentle, patient and persistent.
