Ok, I slapped together a shortblock today (remind me never to use Teflon coolant rings) and all went well. When I turn the eshaft via the front bolt with a wrench it turns nice and smooth with good whooshes. I can't turn it by just grabbing the shaft though. Manual says it should turn freely. Is it supposed to be free enough to just turn by hand?

 

i never tried by the shaft but i have tried by the flywheel. you will get a little resistance....

 

I have to use a wrench on the front nut to turn mine. No hand jobs on front nut, if you please

lol.. do you have spark plugs in it? if so you'll have compression and you won't be able to turn it by hand.. also, do you have any end play? You have to be carful when putting the front end together because if the spacer is not sitting inside the first needle bearing your going to have problems really quick... You should have a tinny bit of end play.. The engine I just put together 2 days ago will turn by hand but it takes a lot of force and a good grip on the e-shaft, but somtimes they are a little tight, but it'll break in... JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOME END PLAY..

 

i notice the same thing as dragon, you can turn it by the eshaft but its not easy. on the flywheel it should be fingertips

The other thing is did you oil every thing as you built up?

I just put together my engine last week.. I have to use the ratchet on the front but with the flywheel I was able to spin it by hand..

 

It's all oiled up, no plugs on and is very smooth to turn with a wrench. I can even turn it with a small 3/8" ratchet. I am pretty sure I could turn it easy with a flywheel on in that case so I guess I am ok here.

As for teflon seals, they would not stay in the grooves no matter how much hylomar I used and the plates were not even upright or inverted. I had to clean the groove up and then use lots of vaseline for them to stay on. I spent more time messing with them than the actual assembly. It's stock ones for me next time.
