hey my gfs alt. on her rustang at 2000rpm is putting out 14.25v but only 21 amps. supposedly it should be putting out at least 65 amps at that point. for the last few days her battery has been dead a couple of times, but not consistently. anyone know if that means the alt. should be replaced?

 

I would almost think the battery instead? If the alternator is putting out a certain amount of voltage, but it is seeing higher resistance than usual, it would put out less amperage. Got a spare battery to try?

the low amp output could be the alternator, the battery, or the cables. I would have it checked somewhere that has the proper equipment before you waste money on a part you don't need. To me it sounds like a bad diode in the alternator, but without the proper tests, it's hard to say for sure.

 

it's not hard to get it tested, most place's will do it for free, take's 15 min's at very most, been very useful to me in the past
