89-91 alternator into 86 NA
What do I need to run a 89-91 alternator on my 86 NA?
I noticed the electrical connection is in a different location and looks like a different plug too...
What do I need to make it work - or should I not try?

It think it should fit. I don't think Mazda had changed the Alternator for quite a while. The Alternator only has 3 wires going to it, One directly to the battery via a fuse block, one to the ALT light and one to a switched 12V source.
If you need to rewire it I can post which is which... I had to rewire mine to wire it up to my Suzuki harness. It is cake.

The connector plug should only have two wires. Series5 is diffrent from series 4, so all you gotta do is get the new plug with the alternator (sp), cut off the old one, and connect the new one. I guess those crimp connector things would do the job. as Dac said, it's cake.
