I know so many people with imports that have blown motors from overrevving its not even funny. Reliability what? Miss a shift in your new Celica, and kiss that engine good bye.

Bad rep comes from abuse, lack of maintenance, word of mouth, and topics like this one, it ALWAYS turns into a "I shift @ X thousand rpms and I don't have any problems discussion; there is a redline, it's engine specific, there are advantages and disadvantages to every scenario. The only time I would say there wasn't a redline, would be when your bank book and your billfold weighed more than your right foot!

i was just talking to some new rx-7 owner and he was telling me how he shifts at 9k rpm...

Kid has an 87 t2 stock, i was horrified.

so i started thinking. Just about everyone i've takled to about rotaries has had a conversation taht went soemthing like this.

"oh cool, i used to have an rx7 too. did you know those things dont have a redline? i took mine up to 9-11k all the time. those things were a blast."

which makes me wonder if they really ever had one. besides theres not even power that high!
Believe it or not, way back when I was 17(I'm 24 now..hahah), I just got my license and my pops bought me a well worn 84 GS. It was my second car(the 1st a good condition 87 Sentra that I destroyed). I was also a dumb ignorant kid that thought rotaries had no redline...it took me about a month of my constant 8000+RPM blasts to destroy the motor..I also destroyed a clutch and transmission in that car. I learned very quickly when I started having to pay for all the repairs. When I scored my clean ***, mint, low low mileage 85 RX7....I took it easy and learned a lot about rotaries. I haven't blown one since.....
