Even if all cars manufacturered suddenly were hydrogen powered, there would still be just as much pollution. The methods to process it would still use electricity, which is mostly created by fossil fuels today. The fossil fuel consumption would decrease for vehicles, yet increase for hydrogen production/electric power. Hydrogen won't be a success for the environment until we can find a better means of deriving it. If we were to do an entire revamp of energy production, switching to only solar, wind, and falling water generators, and at the same time use hydrogen powered cars, then it would be a success.

Sorry if this is irrelevant, I didn't quite read through that whole website.
Totally relevant and totally true. It is too costly and polluting to produce hydrogen right now for it to be competitive.

Question for you: What does this mean in HP? Does it reduce the amount of HP possible? Many Deisel and Hybrid cars aren't too powerful...And what could/would it mean for turbo's? It's still an Air/Hydro mix right? Err something...(As it may seem, I have no clue..)

HP:

It all depends on how you plumb the fuel delivery system.

*Hydrogen carburetors allow for only 50% of the HP and overall efficiency compared to gasoline.

*Throttle body injection is a little better at 70% of gasoline.

*Direct injection is where it is at! There have been gains of 10-15% over gasoline.

These are all BTU for BTU comparissons... not volume.

Turbos:

I don't know of anybody doing this right now. Hydrogen has a high octane rating but when it does detonate you get a big BOOM! A conservative amount of boost from a turbo might just be possible, but I am sure that it would be for efficiency and not for performance right now.

Mix:

Most engines now are running air/H2 mix. Hydrogen will combust at mixes as low as 4% and as high as 90 something%. There are hybrids that use hydrogen to suppliment petrol either diesel or gasoline.

The optimum reaction or what is called a stoichiometric reaction is one Oxygen atom for every two Hydrogen atoms, this of course yields water. Hydrogen has such an affinity for oxygen (ever wonder why the earth is 70% water and not other hydrogen compounds?)

This is turning out to be a great thread. Let's keep the ideas coming.

Although a few years late, I agree

So the question is, how do I go about making my brothers renesis hydrogen compatible? (I am not going to mess with my already fuel pit FD, and it is a turbo anyways) l know Mazda has made them. I want one too!

I can't believe I typed that, it sounds too smart. I must've just been watching the Discovery Channel or something.

It's why it's only viable solution if the refilling stations are all powered by solar energy to produce Hydrogen...otherwise there is no point. And that is the direction that they want to go towards...thank god.

like everyone said, no point in making your car hydrogen compatible, hell only 1 station in japan has hydrogen, and MAZDA owns it.

One solution I liked was for everyone to have their own power generators at their home. Wind or solar, whatever. Then power up your electric car with that. All the technology exists for that right now, including the car (somewhere). Or use that power to convert hydrogen for the car.

so whats the deal with the hydrogen rotary powered premacy in japan? that would be sweet to test drive.
