I am trying to connect my laptop to my desk top. I need to pull a rather large amount of files off the laptop before I reformat it. I have lan cards on both computers, and a cable for it. desktop is running XP professional, and laptop is running Win2k professional. Is there a way to do this, and fi so, can someone walk me through it? IF you can, please IM me AIM: Pistonless87

you need a crossover lan cable, then you have to share the drives... its pretty easy. xp and 2k are easy to do it on. just make the workgroup of the laptop the same as the desktop

I have a lan cable, at least one that I used when I connect to our lan at work. looks like a phone line, but wider. Is this what I need, or do I have to have something else?

I am not completly computer retarded, but damn near it!!!

No this is a different type of cable. Do either of the boxes have USB or FireWire, or do you have a hub?

if you want to make your life REALLY EASY goto your local compusa and they have a USB cable to connect two computers. all you do is plug it in. install the drivers and install the software. then it shows you host and client computers..... it works really well

That's exactly what I was going to suggest...it's probably a lot easier than using a crossover cable. Let us know how it goes.

Found a wiring diagram for the LAN crossover cable on the net. Took one of my LAN cables, and cut it, respliced the wires, and got it right the first time. After about 5min of hacking at the computers I finally got the thing to work, with all naked pics of the ex-gf moved without issues. (damn not having a floppy drive on the desktop, and no cd burner on the laptop!!!)

Thank you all for the help!

cat 5 cross over is like 5 bucks. No biggie.. i have tons of it laying around. As for win2k, you have to remember to add the other user to your user list. New people never remember that
