Handguns...
If you can find one, a browning Hi-Power is fantastic, the FN remake of it is even better. Ive put about 300-400 rounds through the Berretta 92, its a very nice weapon. I also like the HK USP, although i have only fired it maybe 30 times. Which is better than most in my area, since H&K is illegal to own by civillians in Canada. I also felt that the HK P7 was tiny, too tiny for my liking. I really like the model 1911, its a really steady weapon for target shooting. But if youre looking for cost effectiveness, go with a .22. They are cheap as hell, and there is practically no recoil. If you want more punch, you can even pick up a .22 wildcat. I dont like that cartridge though. Also the P226 is a fantastic weapon too. I really liked it. If I had the choice, I would buy a 226, or an M1911.
You can't own a Five seveN in the USA, it holds more then 12 rounds plus the round is intended to punch through armour. They are thus extreamly illegal.
Berretta makes an OK gun, brownings are nice.
I love revolvers.
Para Ordinance, didn't know they were still around. They made a nice M1911 clone back in the 80's. Springfield I allready mentioned, very nice gun.
Dad had an H&R revolver that was fairly nice.
I love guns, was raised not to be scared of them and know how to use and respect a gun. I have never once seen a gun jump up off a table and kill someone.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Ruger. They make some damn fine handguns. On the automatic side, the P-series guns are sweet. Sure, they're not fine pieces like Sigs and H&Ks, but they will shoot whatever you put through 'em without a jam or complaint. I had a P89DC for a long time and I loved it. It's a nice, full-sized gun and was really easy to breakdown for cleaning or maintanence.
On the revolver side, I think the GP100 is among the finest revolvers made. I currently own a stainless one with a six-inch barrel and it's so nice. I love that I can take my wife to the range and she can shoot .38s through it and when it's my turn, my hot, self-loaded .357s make adjacent shooters wonder what the hell is next to them. From what I understand, Ruger is the only handgun manufacturer that actually designs their products to handle +P+ ammo without malfunction.

Even if you don't hit your target, the sound will scare them off.

Nothing against Ruger quality, but the look and feel of their product is sloppy. I took a look at the P-series but I couldn't stand the things. Feels really cheap and loose. Those qualities are desirable in a one-night stand, but not in the handgun you choose to live with. But I digress.
The GP-100 does come off a bit better, but it just doesn't have a high-quality look or feel to it.
And I must admit, I own a Ruger 10/22. I think their rifles are pretty neat, I just don't think much of their handguns.
Just my two cents.
