Honestly, I'm not sure I believe the refurbishing thing from a chemical standpoint. The problem is, any impurities in the battery are stuck in there so if you ever used water that wasn't deonized, it ties up molecules that allow electricity to flow in and out of the battery. It depends on how old the battery is and how well taken car of it was, but chemically it's a no-go when there's noticeable impurities. The easiest way to tell is to do what this guy outlines: http://www.users.bigpond.com/solarbbq/batt...ejuvenating.htm. He seems to know his stuff. If you end up still having tons of deposits on the plates after getting rid of the sulfate, then it's pretty much junk.

Just a couple notes: when you switch out the acid for new sulfuric acid, get some pH paper to check the acidity. You'll know how much to dilute your new acid (remember a pH difference of +1 is 10 times the concentration, +2 is 100 times, -1 is 1/10th and so on). When putting the cleaned plates back in give them a good wash with deionized water, which is cheaper than distilled water and works fine for this application. Thank you chem major haha (I'm a drop out, couldn't stand the ****).

Won't the hydrometer tell me acid content? Well first I am going to try the epson salts trick, I dunno if you've heard of it, but a bunch of people on the cruising forum swear by it. If that don't work I think I will say **** it and go get me some gel cell batteries. I can get very good prices on marine batteries so I might as well go all out. LOL

never heard of the epsom salt trick, but it sounds like it might work. we talked about batteries in school, so that was a loooooong time ago, but if you knock the sulfation off the plates, and put new acid in there, i think it should work fine.

and rob's right too, you need to figure out why it boiled off all of a sudden like that, you might be right about the charging thing, but you might wanna check the voltage just to be sure
