Swap 87NA to 88gxl
Hi all, need some tech advice. I have a wrecked 87 NA 5 speed with 7000 miles on my rebuild engine. I want to swap it into a 88 N/A GXL automatic. Is this possible and how much extra work will it take? Gary
yes its possible, will be very east too!( compared to most things) it will bolt right up, all u will need in a n/a manual ECU, im pretty sure the 7s with autos the ecu controlled it. U will also need your manual driveshaft to complete it.
Hey Racer, why do I need the flex plate and counter weight off the old engine? I'm swapping the engine and changing from auto to manual? Completely different tranny drive shaft and eng. Am I missing something? Fill me in if I sound confused. I'm not being a smarty pants I just never done this so I want to make sure. Thanks. Gary
I already have the 87 NA in my garage waiting to find another car to put the engine in. I crashed while driving to work and ruined my baby. My engine only had 5000 miles on her. I spend allot time and money putting a rebuild in her and almost all new engine parts. Struts, exhaust, tires. To much not to try to find her a new body.
Hey guy's, one more question on the auto to manual swap. Do these cars come with the proper mounting wholes or set up for both auto and manual at the shift section? I will have all the molding and hardware from my 87 5 speed. Is this all I need? Thanks again. Gary

FOr some reason, The auto chassis are different from the manual chassis for the trans mount wholes.

you will need to fab up a new mount. Once you get to that point it will be preaty obvious what needs to be done. The counter weight and flywheel will not need to be changed if you're taking an entire drivetrain out of one car to another. The driveshaft will though and the starter. You will run into the biggest problem with the pedals. They are a sum-bitchh to get out of one car and into another. All in all you can do this with the help of one strong freind and a little help from the web. There is also two wires you need to cut in the cruise control computer that will allow it to work with the manual, although I forget which two wires. The tach in the auto will also have a lower redline indicated, but don't let that fool you.
