Anyone here rebuilt the syncros on their tranny before? My mechanic's been really busy lately (he helps me for free on the side), and my wife has been giving me grief about getting it working again. I'm contemplating doing this myself.

Anyone have thoughts on that matter? I'm itching to drive the car again. It's way too fun to sit in the garage.

I've been reading through the service manual for my 240sx, to get an idea of what it'll take. Seems like a few special tools (gear pullers and a special stand w/ vice to hold the tranny guts, some oil seals) and some elbow grease to finish it.

I'll be picking up my service manual for my FD in the next few days, so then I should have a more accurate idea of what it's like. I can't imagine 5 speeds could be that radically different. Famous last words, eh?

Before I spend much more time looking into this, I'm just wondering if there's anyone here that has set out to do this by themselves. There has to be a first time for everything..

The stealership wants way too much for me to even consider them. They're asking 10 hours of labor, when I already have the tranny sitting in my 240's trunk.

well first, it is doable although it is not easy or simple. it will take you way more than 10hours to do it yourself, but since you're not charging yourself labor time its prolly not a big deal. it does take some special wierd pullers (might be able to rent/borrow them from the dealer, or something) and a lot of patience. the way the tranny comes apart depends on the case design, the gears and stuff are going to be similar. the fd tranny makes you do some dissassembly before you can pull the guts out of the case. i dunno how the nissan is

i concur with j9fd3s, if you've never done a trans rebuild before don't try it on this tranny, IT WILL DESTROY YOU! If you still decide to diy make sure all your clearances are within spec. Good Luck

It is 50/50 with rebuilt FD tranys. Some are noisy and some are not. What synchros are broke? If it is just 5th then you could do it quick it it is out of the car. Just need one special tool. If you fucked the whole box then spend the bucks and get a fresh trans from mazda. $2199 and it will go for a long time.

thats the other thing, all the bearings synchros and seals are $1200, a brand new tranny is $2200, so if you have to replace anything other than normal stuff a new box is tough to beat. ie hub sets run $150+ and theres 3 of them, etc etc

Reviving this thread for a bit of mech help:

I took the tranny to a shop.

I decided to read through the service manual today to see what steps they go through to put the drivetrain back together. I noticed when the manual asks you to remove the driveshaft from the rear diff they want you to mark the drive shaft and diff, so that it's easier to line stuff back up when re-installing.

I didn't do that. I didn't think you could bolt the drive shaft back to the diff in a "wrong" way.

Is this going to be a problem? Do I need to follow any special instructions to reinstall this correctly? I didn't check the flanges, but I'm pretty sure they're square (that makes sense on a rotating piece). So, that leaves 4 ways to connect this drive shaft to the diff.

For re-installation the manual just says to line up the markings.. which I'm guessing means it's nothing big. I'm assuming if there were a tricky bit they would've elaborated more. Just wanted to check.
