Unhappy

Im hoping to purchase a 3rd gen Rx-7 (R1) from a local dealer in the near future...Im going to have a look at it here in the next few days. Does anyone here have tips on what I should look for to see if it is mechanically sound, when I pop the hood or possibly take it for a test drive?

This is all I know about it as of right now, its a '93 R1 5-speed with 77xxx miles on it.

And one question, what is the different between a Touring/R1/R2 and the years of the production years of the R1/R2?

Any replys are

I would rather buy from a private individual than a dealer any day.

At that milage it is resonable to assume that the coolant seals will fail in the engine soon and the engine will have to be rebuilt.

Look for exsesive white smooke on start up,a rough idle when started. You can open the filler neck while the car is running and look at the coolant for small champagne like bubbles. All signs of coolant seal failure.

Click here for more info on O ring failure

Other than that take a boost guage with you and hookit up on the manifold and make sure your getting good vacum.I think on a stock engine it should be around 18psi.

Look for exsesive oil in the intake elbow just before the throttle body.

You can take it off with a 10mm wrench.Lots of oil will suggest bad turbos.

And just listen for loud noises from the suspension when youdrive it. A car with only 77k on it shouldnt have any issues there though.

Good luck
