ok honestly this to me is a very stupid question but, If you grab the shift ****, and pull upward a little should the shifter have about a half inch of play up and down, cause if not what could the problem be?

Thanks

Lift your shifter surround up, and see if the 3 bolts are still there and tight; they hold the shifter down. Is your shifter sloppy at all when in any gear? It might need new bushings (cheap and easy to change out).

I had the same problem. The upper and lower shifter bushings were just gone... not just worn down, gone. Mazdatrix has the upper and lower bushings for it for a reasonable amount, and they fix it right up (altho they are a tad stiff for the first week or so)
