ok honestly this to me is a very stupid question but, If you grab the shift knob, and pull upward a little should the shifter have about a half inch of play up and down, cause if not what could the problem be?

Thanks

Lift your shifter surround up, and see if the 3 bolts are still there and tight; they hold the shifter down. Is your shifter sloppy at all when in any gear? It might need new bushings (cheap and easy to change out).

Can anyone please direct me to some cheap but O.K. shifter bushings and a how-to? Mine's not horrible but it's not as tight as it should be :-p

I had the same problem. The upper and lower shifter bushings were just gone... not just worn down, gone. Mazdatrix has the upper and lower bushings for it for a reasonable amount, and they fix it right up (altho they are a tad stiff for the first week or so)
