My '88 tubo idles at 1100 rpm. Cannot drop the idle no matter what.

Another strange thing:

when idling, if I press accelerator, RPM starts pulsating with ~1 sec frequency and ~500 RPM amplitude. (up until 4000 rpm)

Any suggestions are GREATELy appreciated.

Hey, mine idles around 1300 - 1700. I think I just need to remove the thermowax in the throttle body (throttle body mod.), and that should do it. Does your idle surge (go up and down) when the car is just at an idle?

Any vacuum leaks? Check that the air flow meter is mounted securely. If you're getting surging at idle try unplugging the short rangeTPS while the car is running to see if it goes away.

i dont think its a vacuum related problem. say you rev the engine to 1500 and just let it sit there, it cuts out regularly for a fraction of a second ever so often like its not getting spark or something. messed up crank angle sensor?

ah, also with a timing lite hooked up the trailing side isnt firing regularly, it fires fewer times than the leading

oh well, i cant test anything right now anyway considering the car is in peices in the garage awaiting parts

ACTUALLY, RX-7'S ARE PRETTY KNOWN TO HAVE A FLUCTUATING IDLE. AT LEAST THE 2ND GENS ARE. FROM WHAT I REMEMBER, I THINK JUST THE AIR ORIFICE HAS TO BE REPLACED. MAYBE THAT AND SOMETHING ELSE. BUT IT'S SOMETHING TO LOOK INTO. CUZ I KNOW WHEN I START MINE UP IT GOES KIND OF CRAZY TOO, BUT THEN IT CALMS DOWN.
