Tranny might be shot, but not sure. It won't go into gear. Tranny is manual shift. stuck in nuetral. I backed the car up ok, went to put in first and wouldn't go, as a matter of fact it wouldn't go into anygear, not even back in reverse. Any suggestions as to what to look for? If i can repair or replace a part without replacing the tranny I just might. As a second question, if tranny is bad, where can I get a rebuilt or new tranny for my '86 gxl?

so its stuck in reverse? try loosening the backup light switch, it unscrews. if that fixes it add a washer between it and the trans

Can you put it in gear with the engine off?

1 answer for each post.

Im not exactly sure that it is stuck in reverse, unless I just described the symptoms of a vehicle stuck in reverse.

I can put the vehicle into gear while it is off, however when the vehicle is on, nuetral is all I can get.

so to say that it's stuck in reverse I can't. But to say that the last gear I had it in was reverse, prior to the tranny doing what it's doing. I can say YES. I was backing the car out of my garage, I took the car out of reverse and went to put it into first gear and thats when I couldn't get any gear to work. I can put it in gear with the car off, but if I leave it in gear and turn it on, I tryed once and the car stalled out right away.Engine turned right back over on a restart but I couldn't get the car to move.

Maybe this might help. With the car off and set to nuetral it rolled back into the garage very easy. If it were stuck in reverse I don't believe I could do that?.

Check the hydraulics, maybe the line burst or the slave finally gave out.

If that were the case it would be noticable in the pedal pressure and everything.
