Ok, i bought a 1988 rx7, non-turbo. Motor was out of it on a stand. Brought it home and in a day put everything back together, with a few adjustments and flaws it started. smoked like crazy(i think bad gas from car sitting). after starting once, the car would have to sit for 2-3 hours before firing up again. took top of airbox off and airfilter, and the car fires up everytime, but bogs down when hitting the throttle, and no spark from trailing coils. Any ideas??

Oh and the gauge cluster doesnt work at all. no rpms nothing. and the gauge lights dont come on. i really need some help. im lost.

ok. i got the car to start. idles a little rough and when you try to rev it up, it misses and bogs down. but the car wont start with the top of the airbox on. i have replaced the MAF 3 times but still nothing. i got all of the gauges to work but the tach. and i still have no gauge lights.

no vaccum leaks that i have found, and i changed the air conrol valve, but still no help.

could this be a ECU problem??

And after starting it and running it at idle a few times, i have found that the oil smells like gas.

big problem, and i dont know where else to look.

the oil smelling gas is partialy normal although should take more than a few starts to be present. So youd have to be running extremely rich to quicken the process, which explains the hard starting and all the other issues really. It could be that its so rich it cant get enough air with out the box open and therefor doesnt start. If the filters not new replace it and then check some of the sensors make sure none are broken/disconected, then move on to checking the resistance of them. theres one at the back of the water pump uses an injector style clip and its very important to be hooked up and working properly as its been explained to me to control the start up fuel correction map and defualts at -40. past the sensors make sure your getting good spark and the plugs and wires are all up to par.

well i wasnt aware that there was a sensor there. i know that there is a one wire plug just bove the water pump which i have no idea where it goes.

i was getting to the point where i was gonna check the cats to see if they were clogged, but that is something else that ill have to check out. is it actually behind the water pump or behind it as in on top of the motor? thanks for the help. much needed.
