ive had my rx-7 for a lil while now and ive learned a lot about it from this website and some books. i removed my power steering pump and am about to install a manual rack. the car sounded fine when i bought it, only had 66,000 miles on it,ran perfect i know i have an exhaust leak,a small one but the car sounds like its almost knocking and nobody around here works on RX-7's, it a 88 GXL. does the knocking sound like a piston engine knock or a lot different or do they even knock at all? could it be like say the water pump or the oil pump? i cant really say if its a knocking sound cause i still havnt heard any other rx-7s or seen any for the matter where i live.thanks for the help and answers.

waste ricers,all of them!!!!!!!

try running some 92+ octane, then see if it goes away or happenless. If u think its knocking, its the engine, u'll know its a distinct sound.

is there any way you could describe the sound? would the knock be like a piston powered knocking? for all i know its normal, the sound reminds me of what a diesel would sound like i mean its not loud but its noticable inside the car or when your about 5 feet when its idling in neutral.thanks for the help.

get those pesky nos powered honda's!!!!!!! thats cheating, heheh il want it!

I've never heard an engine "knock" at idle. It is most often a problem under load, and at relatively low RPM's, for instance if you're pulling a hill in too high a gear. My old RX-2 would knock, or "ping" sometimes, and it sounded a lot like a regular piston engine when it did. Kind of like marbles in a tin can. My '89 626 sounds a little like a diesel at idle, and I always thought it was the injectors, but I don't know for sure. I agree you should try premium gas and see if it goes away. And check your plugs for signs they're running hot or damaged from detonation.

it's probably the exhaust leak... it's not going to knock at idle!

Try playing around with the clutch (pushing it in and listen for a different sound) i know on my '86 i get a sound that could possibly be mistaken for pinging... and its only noticable at idle. I think its just the clutch plates rattling coz my clutch is worn, which is half the problem....

The idler pulleys can cause a rattling/knocking sound as well.
