My car has like a wierd knocking that sounds like it's coming from the trans whenever it's sitting at an idle in gear...in neutral it's fine it runs at 600-700 rpms... but when I put it in gear it goes down to 400 or so and sounds like a diesel from the knocking. It's an automatic so it spends more time in gear than in neutral. Any help?

There are so many issues with an AT. What does the ATF look like (clean & clear)? Is it full? Is it shifting quickly or does it seem delayed before it gets into gear (reverse or forward)?

Tank is topped off (well not really but it's full) and it doesn't really have any problems shifting...only when it's really cold and not warmed up all the way yet it hesitates. It does it no matter what gear it is...if it's something other than park or neutral it does it. Wierd thing is... it only does it sometimes. And when the radiator fans kick on the rpms get even lower...not too sure if that's normal but seems reasonable.

the trans fluid if clean should be red, not clear.
