How far away should headers be from the bellhousing? I currently have 1/8" between the middle pipe and the edge of the bellhousing. I was thinking about filing the edge down so there'd be less heat-soak or whatever it's called. The more space, the better, right? Should I add a piece of sheet metal to the edge of the bellhousing as a makeshift heat shield? I will be covering the idler arm for sure.

 

I'll definetly tack some sheet metal onto the inspection cover; if for no other reason than to simply have something there.

 

Not sure about the bell housing but the idler arm is a must.

 

The part of the centerlink where it hooks to the idler arm will also get heated up by the header pipes. I may wrap it in something. It actually touches the header and oil pan at the same time, but I think it'll be ok because the steering wheel can still go lock to lock. It only hits at the end of each direction. Oh, and it actually hits an oil pan bolt on each side, instead of the pan itself. Good thing the pan is flat back there.

 

Sounds like you have the clearance at least.Now you need to start getting ready to make the car street worthy again after the cutting and welding.Even some undercoating to the car will be good for it

 

yah you need some heat shields easy to make.



get some header wrap, and you saftey wire it to the metal sheild, it works great
