OK I have a first gen with the 12A, manual. Recently it started making a whistling noise a little above 4k rpms in second gear, I think it might be one of the belts. any ideas?? also sometimes when I shift into second it clicks into gear a little rougher then I would like, like it almost grinds. The clutch is fully depressed when this happens, but If I double clutch or shift really fast it goes in really smooth. would this be a worn synchro.??

 

it could be the synchro is getting weak, have you tried synthetic oil in the tranny? it helps if you have one thats a little slow. the noise could be belts, sometimes the mufflers whistle too

Yea sounds like belts on the 4K plus, check them out, they are prolly prett ragged, not worth losing a fan belt and hosing the whole engine, but it may just need to tightened.
