hey guys, im very new to the forums, actually this is my first post, i just bought an 84 gsl-se for $500 that runs ( actually i had to replace the fuel pump and an injector seal) and was wondering if any of you know if its possible to remove the smog pump and how to do it w/o messing up the ecu. I also was wondering if putting on a header with a race converter and then free flowing all the way back would mess with the ecu, any input would help, thanks.

Greetings,

I'm not sure about the models with fuel injection but on my 84-gsl I had no trouble running without the smog pump. I had to remove it because it siezed up and I was getting about 8 MPG because it wasn't turning very much. All I did was unbolt it...take off the belt...and plug up all the holes...you have to be certain you plug the holes...as for the ecu I'm not sure...you could always give it a try and if it doesn't work put it back on. Do you still have the cats on the car? The only reason I left it off mine is because it works with them...and they accidently got removed somehow...lol

Anyway, good luck

I have ran my 83, my 84 GSL-SE, my 89 NA and my 88T II all wthout smog pump and cats, no problems. If you run without the air pump and with a cat your cat will plug up much faster as the air is required for cimbustion within the cat. As long as you remove th cat and the airpump you are rocking.

cool, if it worked on your 84 gsl-se then it should work on mine, my exhaust is basically gone so i just (like 2 seconds ago) ordered a header from mazdatrix and a race presilencer(to replace the cats) from rx7.com. when i bolt up my exhaust ill take it off, thanks for the info.

Order an ACV block off plate and remove it as well. Its not needed when you run without an air pump.

the acv is what the air pump is connected to, you can get block off plates from www.k2rd.com, or you could start clicking at the top of the page
