It's taken me such a long time. I can't imagine how one could do a project like this with a full-time job. I'm lucky that I'm a student and alternate semesters: one working full time, followed by one going to school.

At any rate, the assumption now is that my oil seals are blown because of the oil I have flowing out of my exhaust ports. I'm trying to contact a local engine builder to see if I can get this done at a relatively cheap rate.

Thanks for checking it out though!

Oh yeah, she might have taken a little time to read through. But it was all interesting. And I must say a great thred for someone wanting to do this work.

I am a full time student and I work 25-30hrs a week. Now that gets tricky. Thankfully I am a 4th year ME though so I should be out soon enough. When it comes down to it though this swap takes a considerable amount of money and time.

How much is into your swap? I am curious how I did in comparrison to others.

I really am scared to look at the numbers on the project...I can give a rough estimate though:

car: $1400 (78K original miles, GS)

Cosmo motor and S4 TII trans: $2200

T04R turbo from Cheapturbo: $1056 (v-band welding)

Intercooler: $180

Fuel pump: $115

6 puck sprung hub custom clutch: $180

ACT Streetlite Flywheel: $220

AN fittings for everything: $200 (this might even be underestimating)

Powder coating, pulleys: $200 (for UIM/LIM)

TII brakes: $58

Brake rebuild kit: $35

Optima Red Top batt: $130

So about $6K so far .

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but now I need new oil seals and I'm probably going to get the exhaust sleeves replaced.

Bye-bye tax return!

Damn!!! That is good!!! I thought that I was doing good.

Here is my list.

93 low mileage j-spec front clip 2800

Af61 with Oil feel and v-band 900

WG, Elbow, Manifold, BOV 700

Fuel System 700

IC 160

Flywheel and clutch (act 6-puck) 200

couplers BOV flange & t-bolts 100

Microtech with all the extras 1300

Jegs purchase: FP blah blah 500

mounting brackets all other small little things 200

air filter 30

modified driveline 100

gaskets, thermal pellet 75

Water methanol injection Boost controller 140

T2 starter 130

Radiator ( custom 3-row) probably 400

Aluminum welding and supplies 200

tuning 400

Battery 100

There are some other small things not to mention all the little things that I did not include. Also there were tools that I had to buy that added up to a pretty penny. There are also a lot of things that I did myself. The only 2 things that I did not plan on doing are the tuning and the endplay adjustment for the engine.

This is without any of the driveline modification planned such as 8.8 rear, rims tires springs , shocks etc.

All this and it is still brown...gotta love it

I hope that this puts the perspective on the magnitude of this project to all those newbs that want to have a 3rd gen engine in their car. It is not quick and costs quite a bit. Also all the values above are less than what I actually payed. For math sake I rounded down. I expect this ENGINE build to be around 10k.

As far as tax return go, I have the pay

What size is the NPR? Are you still planning on going v-mount Directfreak?

I am not sure on the size, but it does take up the entire nose, and even goes up into the header panel between the tailights.

V-Mount? Probably not. When I double up on the Intercooler, it's going to be pretty damn thick.

Besides, a V Mount is great if you are moving all the time. Once you are in traffic, it will heatsoak very much like a standard TMIC. I have my IC mounted outside the engine compartment, so it does NOT get any radiant heat from the engine.

One important thing I forgot...the Haltech ;-).

So add about 1250 to my total, so $7300?

I'm about to build my engine as well. I thought this project would be easy and cheap, but that's not the case unless you just want a drop-in motor with a limited lifespan.

If I'm going to do this, I'm going all out, you know?

Hell yes, Go big or go home!

I think that if I had to do it over again though I would go with a LT1 turbo or super. Build might have been a lot more but reliable would have been a lot more dependable

Then you would have to get a mullet!!! Just joking.

If you did the lt1 swap, it would probably get boring really quickly. If you spend the money right the first time, and get a professionally built "race" motor, it should be fine.

And yes, Directfreak, setzep, and Dys'85's Turbo FB's are very sexy. And I have been following Dys' for about 2 years now. I really like Directfreak's setup. I want to do just about the same setup as DF's, except use a S5 TII motor.

Wow, that avatar is freaky!

Well I think that I would have to cut my hair into a mullet so that I would fit the role!

v8's were my past life but I have to admit that the rotary is way more fun to drive. Powerband and handling. Yes, the engine that is installed at the current bay is just for tuning purposes. When it blows I will have another built up. Probably small street port with some other goodies.

S5 TII wouold have been a lot cheaper.

Oh, here are some pics of the progress. I got the IC pipe from the turbo to the inlet mocked up.

The avatar is from The Thing. Really cool 80's sci-fi movie. Awesome movie, it's a classic.

S5 TII is much cheaper, or even a 12a Turbo motor from the Jspec FB's.

V8's are nice if you want a shitload of torque at your foot. But you can always downshift in a rotary or 4 banger and have power.

Ok, folks I have been really busy lately. But I have found some time to get a couple more things done.

I went down to a shop here in Wa called HP Connection. I met with the owner and picked up some 3" mandrel aluminum. He was really cool and showed me some of the cars he had. He specializes in turbo'd v8's. He has a nova that is putting out over 1200 to the wheels. Jus thought that some of you might be interested.

Well here are some shots.

picture 1-3: TB to outlet pipe.

picture 4-6: Started to make the mods to my hood. Can you say...cut very carefully?

Please tak into mind that the engine bay is not fully polished yet. I will re-polish when the IC pipe gets welded.

Z

Note: pictures came out not in order. I think that they are explanatory enough though.
