Engine starts missing when rpm's get to 4000

Engine starts missing when rpm's get to 4000
My 85 rx7 runs great but when I start to get to 4000 and above it starts to sputter. Sometimes I can play with the excellerator and power through it but only sometimes. And it doesn't happen every time. Maybe 60 to 70 percent of the time. I have a new fuel filter. Any ideas what wrong?
