Since Phins posted one in the 2nd gen forum i thought i'd ask here, does anyone know of a way to upgrade the the '79 alternator... because unless i'm giving it gas the headlights dim at night... which is kinda annoying.

Thanks in advance

Just buy a bosch rebuilt one. Or maybe just another one that fits in the stock spot that pulls more amps and you can take the pully off yours. Theres lots of solutions.

FB alternator should fit - it's internally regulated (whereas the '79 has an external reg) and probably easier to come by. FC alternators can fit too. I have a 1990 TII alt on mine (80 amp). I had to use a couple of washers on the long bolt to get the pulleys to line up just right (minor detail).

If you use a later alternator, you will need to do some minor rewiring. There will be a 2 pin plug on the alternator. One wire goes to +12v switched, and the other is for the alt warning light.
