The dream (hence my screen name) is to supercharge my girl...however I don't really have the $3000 or so kicking around to make it happen and probably won't for a few years. I was wondering if I could run a sane shot of Nitrous and not have it be too hard on my motor

(and what a sane shot would be. I really have no experience with NOS at all and just want to know if it's worth it in HP gains vs. engine stess. My GSL-SE has a RB header and no cats, direct fire ignition setup, intake and all the emissions garbage removed. Motor probably has 65,000 miles on it and is NOT ported. I'd just be using the NOS on the odd times when I need that extra umph in a race or just for my own sheer enjoyment...not at the drags. Anyone have any advice yea or nay?

You can do a home made supercharger for like $300US. Im working on one right now based on a setup used in an FC, only Im going a step further. Its accually quite easy. And gives you a sense of absolute pride.

As for NOS, I belive theres a little carb adapter you can get that sits between your carb and air filter and can give you anywhere from 50 shot to 150 shot. I dont know much about NOS or its availiable solutions, so I dont know what to say. But with NOS, when you want to go fast, you can. When you want to drive normally without engine stress, you can. With a Supercharger, you drive stressfully fast all the time. Nothing wrong with that of course.

I'm not carbureted...and I'm pretty skeptical about the performance of the $300 setup. Still curious though!

Nitrous is a good alternative, and done correctly will not hurt your engine any more than supercharging.

...not without good reason. The "$300 SC" setup people have been talking about refers to something one of the kiddies on rx7club had cobbled together. Hopefully Alak is "going one step further" and putting the throttle body where it belongs so as not to induce driveability problems. Actually I saw a diagram of a Bendix system that was blow-through, but it had a double acting actuator on the (large) bypass valve so it could sense pressure _differential_ across the throttle, as opposed to just vacuum (not sufficient). But it was also a low power setup - the blower was a giant smog pump. I also can't say for sure the system was ever produced, as it was only seen in a book.

Ya Im going for an old fashioned blower setup. Hopefully we're going to place the supercharger on the intake manifold, then put the carburator on the top. Its going to take a bit of custom fabrication (Alot Accually), but now that we look at it, its going to be more than $300. AND I'll have to cut a hole in the hood. But it should be sweet.

Seriously good luck with that man...I'd love to find a way to get blown for cheap! I want to see pics and a good writeup when it's done. I'm assuming this is going on a 12a....? I really like the Atkins setup, but damn is it expensive (not that I blame them...they have to recoup R+D costs).

Stock carb? Might be kind of small and will pull a serious vacuum, thus hindering performance.

I wonder if you could mount the blower "vertically", ie with the lobes top and bottom instead of side by side, and make a 90 degree inlet adapter - or would that nail the strut tower?

There could be room for a side mount, Maybe even use Webber carbs too. But I was thinking of just cutting a hole, then upgrading the carb to a bigger holly, like 650cfm then getting a nice little scoop depending on how much it sticks out of the hood. My engine is starting to leak oil so I might get it rebuilt, maybe ported and get the shop to help me develop the system while Im at it. Do it all in 1 shot. Im kind of lacking funds though, my 1998 Supra's blow-off vavle just died and its $400US for a new one
