Yes a lot of people don't relize this, I don't understand why people buy such big *** turbos and don't use them in their most efficient psi ranges, seems like a waste of money to me.
I think a lot of it has to do with the bragging rights. With some of these newer turbos like the gt35/40 with the use of ball bearings to help with spool, you may begin to see larger turbo's used more often. Turbo's like the greddy t-88 and hks t51 are defenitly overkill and a waste of powerband for a street car. You hear a lot of mixed feelings about the t-78, some don't mind the extra lag others hate it. Personally lag isn't that important to me, however the t-78 still seems a little large to me. I'll trade the 500-600hp potential for a little extra power 500rpms quicker with a smaller turbo.

It's so true...for me it was a matter of getting what I thought was a good deal on a T78 kit. Turns out the turbo was ba and I ended up upgrading it to the GT79 compressor. That compressor, according to Majestic, outflows the T78 psi for psi, even in the lower rev range. Dunno. If I had my choice, I'd go GT3540 or with something from Innovative that spools a bit quicker. On the plus side, this turbo should do quite well when I slide a three rotor in :-)

Will that gt79 keep up with a 3 rotor? Do you need to swap out any internals for it to flow enough exhaust you think?

I'd go with one of the innovative turbos if I had the money. T66 or T70 dual BB, hell yeah

If I go with the T78, or whatever I upgrade to,

Is the tranny an issue?

How many have you broken? Vosko? Anyone?

The stock tranny is very strong, can hold a good 600hp from what i've heard.

What about the motor? (with proper tuning)

I can't buy a motor every year (or a tranny)

I know it wouldn't last 10 years, but what is average for 15-18 psi?

I'll be honest, I'm deployed, sold my Camaro before I left,

and am buying something when I get home.

Love FD's, but am worried about reliability issues with more power.

I understand rotaries don't generally last as long, but I am not rich.

Just looking at my options when I get the time, internet is hard to get to here,

but when I get on I usually am reading about 7's.

Pro's, Cons and any advice on FD's or other cars are welcome.

It really just comes down to doing things correctly and not taking any shortcuts. Good solid tuning is part of that equation. In my case, I'm about to rebuild a hurt motor. The only reason the motor is hurt is because of my stupidity. I did a few things wrong when I converted to a single turbo (and I knew I was doing it wrong at the time) and it ended up biting me in the *** The most glaring mistake was not putting a filter on the end of the turbo. I live in Florida. Home of sand and sunshine. Most importantly, the home of sand and lots of it. Ingested a bit and that's all she wrote...car still runs fine which has given me time to tear apart a used engine and rebuild it (with the help of this list!). Thing is, I would be turning 68,000 miles here shortly, having made 340 rwhp or greater most of the engine's life. I went mod crazy after purchasing the car but I did everything correctly including all of the "safety" mods. Most importantly, I had the "basics" such as a fully programmable computer, the fuel system, etc., the less glamourous stuff in place before doing the big hp mods. And I made sure it was tuned correctly and safely along the way. It's not a car you can ham fist mod and get away with it though. Hope that helps a bit. Oh, and it also helps to acquire an FD in good shape mechanically, something that's getting harder and harder to do.

If you tune properly, good air/fuels keeping them on the safe side of 11:1 or even as rich as 10:5:1, with the timing down to 15 or 14 degrees in the 15-18psi range you will be fine. I have been running 18psi on pump 93 for a good 2 years now and put on over 20k miles, its also my daily driver. Tuning is the most important part, make sure you know for sure what all your settings are and consult the forum for approval or advice.

My tranny was brand new when i bought the car 3 years ago and is still in good shape, other than shifting from 1st to 2nd is starting to get a little grindy after a few bad mis-shifts, but its not bad at all. Have you thought about what fuel management setup you are going to go with?
