Time to put up or shut up...13B-REW into RX3?
#1
Well my project has been ongoing for the last couple of years. Started with a 1972 RX3 that was converted into a race car and I brought it back to the street. One major problem was I was never able to get the ported 12A to run properly and after a year of working on smoothing out the engine to become a semi-daily driver it sat for a while. I'm tired of looking at it and now have an idea... if it isn't going to frustrate me beyond that damn 12A, I'd like to drop a stock 13B-REW into the car. Sure wish I could have made it work, because it's a blast to drive with the 12A, just doesn't want to run at low RPMs.
Now from reading previous posts and such I know the engine mounts are going to need to be changed as well as the tranny mounts (no big surprise). One question I have is if it will be easier to use a tranny from the REW or to find a TII tran? Most of the REW swaps I keep reading about are from 2nd gen cars and everyone keeps recommending keeping a 2nd gen transmission because it bolts in easier. But this '73 is a whole nother ball game, and I'm assuming the 12A tanns doesn't have the same mount locations as a TII or does it. Would it be easier to find and use a TII trans and not use the stock REW transmission? My thought is if I have to fab new mounts then I might as well fab mounts for the REW trans that I can get with the engine to keep it simpler, or am I way off?
I'm trying to keep the swap as simple as possible and keep the engine as stock as possible for reliability. I figure 255hp into a 1800lb car will be plenty to make me smile.
I'm also assuming the stock ECU will also work with my plan so I shouldn't have to go aftermarket, or is this wrong also?
But with no power steering, brakes or A/C I think this should be a little less complicated than many other people's swaps.
Any help and advice is greatly appreciated.
