ok had a gen 1 rx-7 as a winter car and i loved the power of it. but due to a stupid female driver a few weeks ago it was totaled. i was able to save the motor and tranny and wiring out of it.

as a new winter car i've got a slow 4cyl mustang. im not happy with the cars performance @ all.

what i was wondering was if anyone has ever put a gen 1 rotary from an rx-7 in a fox body mustang or has even thought about it?? i know i have plenty of room and im sure i can make the rest.

im a mechanic by trait. and it really dosnt look that hard to do it would just be time consuming but its all a labor of love!!

what do you guys think about it??

I'm not for putting a rotary in anything that isn't already Mazda, lol. Actually, I don't think you'd be all that satisfied with it just because the 12A motor was designed for a car that weighs less and had an all together different setup then the stang does. Although, you could modify the 12A, but I dunno...that would funny though, and every mustang owner would disown you...

I think it would be to heavy of a car for the 12a. Kennedy Engineered does make an adapter to fit a 12A to a mustang 5-speed trans. With a supercharger from Atkins rotary you might have enough HP to overcome the extra weight(and possable get rid of all of the extra weight such as back seats, etc, and do some metal drilling.)

well the gen 1 motor i had was slightly modified and i alredy have the 5spd from the mazda the stang has a gutted int fiberglass hood and hatch no ac and smog ect ect ect

its 2471 without me (197) my rx weighed 2500 plus i would lose weight due to the rx motor and trans being lighter. the 4cyl had something like 88 hp out of the factory and the rx had approx 100hp im not sure what rear gear the rx had but the stang has 4.11's in it i honestly think the rotary would make it a little more fun

im also sure that you guys know a lot of little "tricks" to bump up the hp on the rx motor

Hi all. Hey 5 litre give it a go. It may struggle a bit with a 12a, but like the other guys said, a few mods should bring it up to scratch. I know you guys over there can be very passionate when it comes to Mustangs and Chevs so I proberbly wouldn't show up a Mustang day without some large friends!!

Over here in the mid '70s, Mazda caused some definate waves when they imported the Holden Premier to Japan, fitted 13b's in the engine bay and sold them as the Holden Roadpacer.

Though theses days it's quite common to see our Holden Gemini sporting a rotary in its engine bay.Basically it's proberbly on the same 'sacrilige' level as your Mustang. As I say, dare to be different!!

the V8 guys may give you some ****... but it is a 4 cytlinder car and I dont see the big deal.

but 4.11's? you sure? it would be 4.10's but 2.3 5 spd's came with 3.45 gearing and 2.3 autos came with 3.73's to help make up for the drag from the slushbox....As far as the heavy part of the older mustangs they arent that bad..... my 2.3 weighs 3050 lbsas or so....

and it is an 89 2.3 aut ocoupe. If you keep the lightweight in the front nose of the mustangs and put bigger sway bars and shocks and springs they cna be really good handling cars.

It sounds like a feasible swap. The Mustang weighs about the same and will give you plenty room to work under the hood. The GSL-SE's came with 4.11 rears, so that would also work well. Just don't go with large diameter wheels/tires. Keep the total diameter small to give you a higher overall final gear ratio (EX. use a wheel/tire combo that is 22" dia. instead of a combo that is 25" dia.)

Lighten the car as much as possible - cheaper that buying Hp and more effective.

You will see some performance improvement, but you may find yourself up against built up V-8 pony cars at the redlight races. Be prepared
