Some engine builders believe in a super smooth port finish. I personally don't. I leave my ports in-between a smooth finish with a rough feel. Fuel needs to aptomize and blend with air/oxygen. I have tried both ways and I have found some different results both ways. Example one engine that was very smooth would not take or consume the same amount of fuel as the other engine that had a smooth but rough finish. this thread is getting intresting. I have more examples of both types of ports but Ill see if members are intrested in this topic.

I would be very interested in what your thoughts are on this. Ive got my own theorys on this, but un-shure if im on the right track.

Hmm........very interesting. Seems as though the guy that's about to build my engine believes in the super polished porting along with polishing out the rotors. He should be tearing down my motor before the weekend. I'll have to ask him to elaborate on his porting methods. He is running a 9 second Rx-3 with a 13B in it. So, he has tons of racing experience and has been building motors for about 12 years now. I'll let you know what he says about the porting.

Not I, My thought son porting are to sand them down with some 120 grit and leave it at that.

I dont think that the runners need to be that smooth and I also think that the a/f mix gets atomized better on the rougher walls.

As long as the shape is good that is.

I do some of the porting here at pettit racing. I know thats pretty far from you guys. But our porting is some of the nicest stuff I've seen. @ 15 psi we can achieve 500+ rwhp. And thats just a street port. One thing that is very important is surface finish. The rule that I have been taught is: Make it perfectly smooth. right up until the fuel injectors. Then the surface finish changes. I've heard ITO does very nice work. And I'm sorry to hear that someone had a bad expierence with pineapple. If you guys want a quote PM me and I'll be happy to get you one.

thats like the rule of thumb with a carb setup, you want it rough where theres fuel mixed with the air.

my guess on the roughness issue is having to do with the boundry layer of the charge? better atomization of the fuel that has dropped out of suspension?

I can't say I have heard of him. Really rare because I try to know a little bit of every single rotary engine drag racer from east to west and north to south
