I know this is an Old Subject and i have spent the last hour searching forums for the answer to no avail.

Basicly, i've just rebuilt my engine and forgot to change the Pilot bearing whilst the e-shaft was out, The bearing does look in good order but could do with a new seal, The question is do i replace the seal and Grease it up or is there more chance of the Output shaft destroying it when the Motor goes back in the car?

I only ask because I've never reused the Pilot bearing and i don't have a Puller to get it out so it would be a Pain in the rear to do the job with the motor on the floor???? I am seriously thinking of reusing it but i have the voice of Reason saying "NO!!!! change it or you will be pulling the motor again!!!"

So what's the general opinion? I can't guarantee how many miles the Bearing has on it (i would guess 40k)

Cheers

Chris

I would never reuse a suspect part that's worth $10 and 15 mins of my time. When down the road it's going to take much more time and effort on my part if it *****.

What is the easiest way to pull and replace the bearing when the motor is out, without the pilot bearing removal tool?

The only time I have seen a failed pilot bearing was due to improper installation.

If it's working fine, leave it alone!

If you don't have the tool, this is a trick I used before. take some WET newspaper and stuff it down the hole until is full. take a center punch(the size of the inner diameter of the hole) and start smashing the wet newspaper with the punch and a hammer. stuff some more wet newspaper and repeat the process. it will take about 4 tries and the wet newspaper pushes the pilot bearing out nice and clean. works awesome.

interesting how something like wet paper gets the job done!

yeah it works, but the punch you use needs to be as close to the i.d. of the bearing as you can get. otherwise you just press out newspaper

If you can, BUY the MAZDA bearing puller. it is a great tool and works very well.

i agree that if the bearing is fine, don't sweat it. I dont think its worth the hassle unless you have the bearing puller. the ones from autozone suck!
