If you get lapping compound you can lap your irons yourself, it just takes patience and time. You slather the center iron with lapping compound, and then basically rub them together, it actually works out very well.

I was told the same thing by the owner of a machine shop. Anyone ever try something like this.

I've done it before. It does work pretty well, and gives you a damn good arm workout!

I did some calling arround one day.

You can take up to 8 thousandths off total(Cant remember that for sure). Only 2 thousandtsh per plate though.

Everyone said good luck getting nitriding thats as good as factory without spending more than a new plate. Nitriding is also less than 1 thousandth so it will not replace enough material if you go more than 2 thousandths on a plate.

A lapped plate will wear quicker but if you premix you dont notice this as much.
Is there a rule of thumb at all about how much longer new or renitrided irons last when compared with lapped housings without the additional nitriding? The engine in my AE lasted about 110, 000 miles. Can I get that again with good compression with lapped irons and new housings and seals?

I never got my s6 irons lapped. I got them milled. They had some rust on the surfaces so i had to do something (cat pissed on it). You could see the lines from the bit but couldn't really feel it after it was machined.

My concern was not to get it too smooth as the oil would not be retained. It was cheap. About 200 for the engine.

I'm not recommending this to anyone but that's what I did and so far seems to work great.

I think it has close to 10k on the clock now.

I was very happy with the results and will continue to do that to other engines.
