i'll be damned if i can remember what the source was [and it was so long ago that i was not mature enough to xerox (or steal ) the source], but i recall reading that the "A", "B" designations came from the seal types that the engines used, as heretic briefly mentioned the "newer" style 12As were actually 12Bs internally. the 13B Renesis totally threw me for loop in it's designation, but i guess since we must attach "Renesis" to it in order to distinguish it from the older 13Bs, it can't get mistaken. hopefully someone else heas read the same and can furnish a source or add more details.

by the way, thanks heretic, rotor width was good info i've never received on the 15A.

I dont care what they do so long as some day they bring us another nimble, sexy, boosted, rotary engine platform. AKA 4th gen Rx7.

Anyone else notice that all the rumors and spy shots of the "next gen Rx7" just kinda disappeared?

yea, there was a 13A, but its pretty rare. I dont get the "C" designation either... id think either A since its the first 1.6L engine, or "B" since it would be based off of the 13B renesis. At this point though, it needs to be significantly lighter and more compact as a whole package than a similar-power piston engine, be it an I4, V6 or V8, because beating those in fuel economy isnt going to happen. The rest of the car will need to be pretty lean to keep the weight down, and direct injection is a must, not only for power but emissions now too. Also, with sufficient reinforcement around the dowels, I dont see why the plates couldnt be aluminum as well as the housings.

Although the 2.3 liter turbo I4 that mazda now makes is a great engine, its ultimately one more reason not to continue their rotary program, as much as everyone here would like otherwise.

the 13a is so rare, that mazda has a restored luce, the car it came in, but it has no engine.

the 2.3T engine is making 265rwhp with the throttle partway closed, and 3-5psi of boost. its got a lot of potential...

What does the throttle position matter if it's got positive manifold pressure anyway? I know what you mean, though.

With better but still pump gas friendly compression, rods that aren't made of rejected pot metal, better intake, and good exhaust, the Ranger version of that engine will make something like 250hp from 5500-8000rpm. Airflow limited by the camshafts. Upgrade the cams and it's up to 300hp, and we're still on stock as-cast unported heads. This is also before you dig up any kind of forced induction.

And, they are light.
