auto x
pay $25 a day
under 2 min usually per lap
3 to 6 session a day
work time, 30min at least per run group sometimes more
usually one run group between the time you run and when you work
track time: (2min x 6 session = 12 min) <-- maximum
work time: 30min
time wasted: 4 hours usually
open track
pay $150-200 a day
about 2min per lap (laguna seca & thunderhill)
15min to 30min sessions
6-10 sessions a day
0 min work time!
track time: (15min x 6 sessions = 90min) <-- minimum
work time: 0 min
takes 90/12= 7.5 times of autox to make it up for 1 day of opentrack
7.5 times of autocross will cost about $187
$187 is already more than lots of track events, such as the $180 vosko posted, and still not sure you will even get as much track time as open track.
I will go with road race...

on top of that, i get to shift to 4th gear on the road track... but 2nd gear only for most of the autox (SCCA rules states, SOLO2 tracks are designed to only have up 70mph top speed. 2nd gear most of the time)

voskos tires are too wide and sticky to learn the limit...get a bmw 325 e30 or a 1st gen car to learn car control...any good driving instructor will tell that a car with no grip and shitty suspension will show you car control. I practically grew up at bridgehampton race circut out on LI...trust me

yes, it is kinda true, that for a beginner it is better to learn car control with a more basic car. 1st gen or e30 are great car to learn with. S13 or AE86 are good choices too. Too bad the riceboys sky-rocketed the price of those cars.
However, for a pretty good driver (one with experience, frequent autox etc) may be it will be better to drive in their primary car and learn "the car" and try to get use to it and try reach the limit of it. (may be with a not so race prep tire)
