Well I was looking at 1st gens but I just couldn't pass up a deal on ebay for a 2nd gen with minor body damage for less than $600. The owner runs a mazda garage and says it drives great. Was one of those situations where the prev. owner abandoned it. His loss, my gain ;-)

Sorry, I'll cut to the point. What's the hot wheel/tire size for CSP? It's an 86 base model with aftermarket 15s but I'm assuming I'll need much wider wheels than whatever it has now. Likewise whats a wining combo of springs/struts/swaybars? Cost IS a factor don't tell me Konis!

Anyone want to recommend an online parts supplier that treats customers right?

Thanks in advance.

I would get a copy of hte SCCA rule books to see what you can mod your car to, to run in the class you want.

For starters i would get an alignment with more agressive camber and may be change the toe for the front and rear.

Then i would change every single suspension bushing on the car.

Next i would get a set of Toyo RA1 or Yoko A03R soft that are already heat cycled.

Depending on the class you may need to run the stock factory ride height, so no lower springs. But you may be able to upgrade the shocks.

It depends.

Thanks for the reply.

I did say I'm preparing for CSP, which does allow spings, swaybars, etc. and wheels/tire sizes are open.

Just wondering what the winning combination is, or what other 2nd Gen AutoXers are running and their experiences.

Thanks,

Alan

You should ask either banzaitoyota or jims5453.

I think jims is running full coilover setup on hoosier A3S03 on some rediculously wide rims.

CSP is for N/A 2nd gens but you have to battle very quick and nimble Toyota MR2 spiders.

I have KYB AGX Shocks and Ground Control Coil Overs. Dont waste money on a rear sway bar stock does the job. I like the Racing Beat front sway bar a lot. You'll need a set of Camber plates too and a rear camber link. Dont forget to get a set of rear toe eliminators. They will transform your car.

While athe KYB Shocks and GC Coil overs are not the cream of the crop you can be competative with them.

For Street Prepared Classes you have to run DOT approved tires. Your sizes are limitless though. Personally I would try to find a set of 17" 2000 Mustang rims. They are cheap and light. You can run a set of 225/45/17 Victoracers or even Hoosier DOT stickies. We had them on my brothers GXL and it was a dream to drive.

Remember to put as much into the driver as the car and you'll be a force to be reconed with.

Cheers the TII is classed in ASP with Vipers and Z-06 Corvettes. The TII cannot compete in ASP due to one stupid rule - No boost controler. Otherwise it would mop up the class.

One other thing on a side note about the N/A's. My friend has a 90GTU and just dropped a ITS Motor in it. They dyno'd it and it put down 190RWHP. His car is amazing to watch now.

I know its expensive but if you ever get really serious about AutoX this is the way to go. I believe a fresh engine and good suspension would be a winning combo even against the MR2 Spiders.

Boy am I kicking myself I JUST SOLD a set of four 17" Roush 5 lug mustang wheels wearing Hoosiers. They were left over from a 94 GT I had a couple of years ago and had been taking up space in the garage. Sold them a couple of months ago. How was I to know they would fit my next car?

Don't think I mentioned its currently a four lug setup anyway. Probably someday I'll do the conversion to get the bigger brakes but for now its less unsprung weight and I'm racing on the cheap until my business takes off.

Is there any real reason why I should go up to a 17" on this car? One of the reasons I chose this platform is that when I get into DEs and Time Trials (have done one so far) this car will be much cheaper to run than a big heavy V8 in terms of brake pads and tires. Is there any good reason why I couldn't just run 40 to 50 series tires on 15" or 16" wheels? Can anybody comment to benefits of larger diameter wheels on track?

Thanks for all the good info.

No keep the 4 lug setup. Just get some really good front brake pads. Like some Hawks or EBC green stuff.

Actually a set of 15" rims will work great. Low center of gravity lower gear ratio less unsprung weight.

Hint: Miata's run on 15" rims = lots of used race tires cheap

You have to check around but a lot of track racers toss a set of tires after 1 race. There is enough rubber left to get a whole AutoX season out of them.
