Seeing as how those bad boys start brand new at 17,000, I'd tell him to suck it. Especially considering you can always wheel and deal with a dealer on a new one, or offer up something to trade in. My buddy traded in his shitty high-miles, 4x2, regular cab mid-90's Ranger and walked away with the Protege5 for 13,000, including tax + license. B)
As far as the performance goes, its certainly nothing to write home about. I would place it somewhere slightly beneath my '86 RX-7 in terms of acceleration, although I wouldn't let that put you off the car entirely. I see the Protege platform as having loads of potential.

The last Protege I drove was actually a nice lil car... seemed more thought had been put into the car compared to others in its class Escort Cavalier even Compared to the Civic... it just felt nice... If it had more power I might have had an interest in it. But if there is a turbo model coming out then that car would be pretty sweet....

By the way, the latest Car and Driver compares the Suzuki Aerio, Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Matrix, Chrysler PT Cruiser, Ford Focus ZX5, and the Mazda Protege5. I'll save you the hassle of buying the magazine and tell you the conclusion.
