Well! I put a fuel pump in the wife's '78 L-82 Corvette last weekend. What a mess of a job! I used to think that it was better to have the pump on the block instead of in the tank, but man, was I wrong!

First off, when this pump failed, it leaked. And it kept on leaking. If I hadn't pulled the line and plugged it, it would have drained 16 gallons of 93 octane on my garage floor.

Access to the pump was horrible--located above the suspension A-arm and below the A/C compressor, and when I pulled it off, the pushrod that works the pump slides down and prevents installation of the new pump. I had to pull the cover plate, grease the rod (heh, heh, heheh) and push it back in the hole and hope it stayed there while I put the thing back together. Arrrggghhhh!

When I changed pumps on the T2, I couldn't believe how easy it was! I'm sure some in-tank pumps are hard to get to, but Mazda did a nice job of making the one on the RX-7 nice and accessible. When I compare the T2 to the 'Vette, the Vette keeps coming up short--straight line, handling (by a ton--this thing drives like a truck) and ease of maintenance.

Still, a vintage Corvette is a pretty cool car, but I'm glad as hell I didn't choose it as a race car.
