One nice thing about the name being on the bumper is that I can tell the different Mustangs apart. There is this new black 'stang vert that runs around my town with heavily tinted windows, black-out taillights, bling bling rims and a BOSS sticker down the side. I always wondered if it was a V8 (you know, to back up "the look"), until I came to a stop behind it and didn't see 'GT' sunken into the bumper. Looks like that 'stang had a healthy helping of rice in its diet, because it certainly didn't have the American beef.

One of the good things about having a car that looks like a cop car is that people tend to get out of your way when they see you coming. If I see something that might be a cop car coming behind me I move into the next lane and stay out of the way. I don't know how many times this has happened and its a couple of gray hairs in the car. But some times its the real thing. Now that I think about it, it is usually the other way around; I come up on them in traffic or spot them ahead of me so I slow down. I guess they usually don't come up on my *** and pass me

I agree, Mercury is making big leaps to try to get rid of the "old people car" image. Cougar was a nice step, even if it it really is just a re-bodied Ford Probe, and this Marauder will be great for anyone (and I'm sure there are *plenty* of people) looking for a really fast "couch/lounge chair on wheels" style vehicle...

I am just not one of those people. My buddy drives an old Crown Vic cop cruiser. Yes, it is fast, but it is a boat going around corners, and I'm sure that's with an upgraded police car suspension too...

Re: patriotism, you show me one American car that handle anywhere near as well as my bottom of the barrel Nissan Sentra for anywhere *near* the price and I will be truly amazed. They just don't do it. American automakers produce what Americans want. Big cushy cars. I hate big cushy cars, therefore I go elsewhere.

Good point, I forgot about the SVT Focus and the Neon R/T, both which are supposed to handle reasonably. Probably comparable in price point, I think my model (1999) was only $13-14k or so but newer Sentras are moving towards the $16-17k range.

I'm still unable to describe either of these vehicles as anything but butt-ugly, but that's my opinion I guess.

Hopefully Ford and Dodge will continue moving their vehicles in this direction... if they do I may be adding them to my "manufacturers to consider list" for the next car 5-6 years down the line. Of course they'd have to make significant progress to outweigh the WRX, Lancer Evo, and RX-8, but you never know!

Im the last one to critisize people for what they drive, but out of curiousity, how many cars have you owned, and what were they? Agreed americans want thier cushy rides, but thats nothing a set of shocks and springs wont handle most of the time, but what americans do have, is engines/drivetrains. You just wont see 30+ year old little jap 4 bangers in the future, it wont happen, thats if the bodies dont rot out first, and lets not mention the transmissions. Not to say all cars dont deteriote with age either, so dont get me wrong. My first car was a 1984 Trans Am, I got it in 1988, being young, stupid, and possessing some cash to get rid of, I yanked out the 305 carburated motor and 200R4 transmission, and implanted a nice worked 350 with Turbo 350 transmission, for about $3500 I had a new engine, transmission, and could destroy every new car there was back then, Corvettes, Mustang GTs, Grand Nationals ( if you have never seen a Grand National go-you wouldnt believe a car that big is that fast ), 350 Camaro Z-28, etc.. You just cant do that with most cars these days, even a 3rd generation is expensive, and expensive to modify- and we all know if you dont know how to tune them- you will kill them shortly. I never thought I would buy a 4 door car, but I did, a Lexus ES300 that my cousin had on lease and took great care of, so I decided to buy iy. The time will come when your sick of the noise, rattling, not being able to take the car out with more then 1 other person, the cops bothering you, inspection problems, people braking into the car, scared someone might steal it, and want some comfort AND speed. The time may come when you have a wife, and family, and thats when a car like the Impala SS ( when they made the good one that was rear wheel drive ), or a Mercury Marauder come into play. Also- keep in mind that american cars are VERY desired overseas, and companies like Ford for example, make different lines of cars for these people overseas that kick ***!

When my friend's wife came here from Sweden she wanted a Camaro. They love them over there. A Grand National can be considered a good family car.
