I reall enjoy seeing another 2nd gen getting a face lift. This car looks very similar to mine in relation to the bodywork repair, specifically in the door areas. The metal is so damn thin, even the slightest tap leaves an ugly dent.

Rob: I am curious as to why you chose to leave all the hinged parts and glass on the car for a full repaint? Or will that happen after the major prep work is done?

Also, is it in the plan to finish the fender wells and undercarriage in the same color as the exterior body? I have been toying with the idea of finishing my car in the same manner, either that or simply blacking out the wells and undercarriage and misting with a light coat of sprayable bed liner from bomb cans.

you cant go wrong either way. blacking it all out is simpler and slightly cleaner looking, imo

The hinged parts are on there because that is only the first coat of primer, the car is getting 2 coats of primer, after the car is block sanded by hand its getting primed again, then the parts come off and the jambs will be painted, then the car assembled again, sanded, painted, wet sanded and buffed.

Fender wells might get chassis black paint from DuPont or I have the system for spraying the bed liner material I can do as well, its just that **** is very thick and im not sure how even it would come out unless you apply it the way its meant to be applied.

Engine compartment is being painted black, originally it was going to be yellow, I talked him out of it for a number of reasons, main one being that black will look nicer and easier to keep clean. Other reason is im not a fan of spraying basecoat/clearcoat in a engine compartment, it takes way too long and the basecoat will not adhere and hold up as well as a good single stage paint will like DuPont Imron, I can even go with a high solids Imron 5000 that will cover in ONE cross coat and will be much more durable.

moldings are not getting shaved, bumper looks fine without shaved moldings, what would you do to the urethane rear bumper to fill the moldings in?

i guess youd have to go with the back bumper from the kit too:

or is that the stock bumper with the skirts added on?

here you can see the guy checking out how they filled in the bumper molding, lol

I cant bring myself to like that black car?

The other thing to remember is your looking at a pic, smooth moldings and urethane bumpers in on a black car then tell me how great it looks in person 2 years down the road. You might stand a chance if the thing is only driven when the sun isnt shining on it!

sorry caught me on the wrong day, i was on bit of an edge all day.

i apologize for my ranting and raving. Especially since i aimed it towards amp who was a cool guy when i met him, is a cool guy online, and in general seems to be a great guy.

And yes, just like cymfc3s my bay will be black. thats merely coincidence since i planned on doing it yellow and then rob explained why black is 100x better.

Again i apologize, and if a mod could see to it to delete my rant post that would be wonderful . Honestly i wasnt trying to be mean, i just had a horrible sunday and i perceived the comment the wrong way.

sorry, back to regular programming,

kevin.

Yea ive seen 7's with the moldings filled in, and on almost all of them, if you see them in person, you can see where the molding used to be.

I prefer to have the moldnig rather then some weird line running under the paint horizontally down my car.
