I am looking for a new head unit for my 88 convertible. The stock sound sytem just isn't cutting it. What are some good units, and what are some I should stay away from? I just want one that plays CD-R's. I don't need the mp3 player or anything. Also, when you buy a head unit, do you get any kind of panels to cover up what you took out? If not, can you buy them seperate? Reason i'm asking is b/c i have a factory radio/cd/tape player, and if I put in a new unit, there will be a lot of open space. Do they make a tray? If anyone knows, please respond.

Thanks

Here is a suggestion, mount the new headunit someplace other than the factory location. If you do not already have an alarm system it is not going to benefit you putting a decent deck in the car. The ease of gettign into a convertibel and stealing a head unit is a box cutter away, and even though you took the time to put it all in right, it takes the thief about 30 seconds to break your entire dash to get it all out.

Just some food for thought.

I like the kenwood products, if you get a double din setup, you will not need a cover plate. I will be installing a Kenwood DPX-6020 in mine, has about the same thing you are looking for and still has a cassete player

on a 1988 vert you can take just the factory cd player out and mount a aftermarket stereo in its place, no cutting, drilling or modifying of any kind is needed.

This way the car still retains its original appearence.

Buy the wire harness adaptor so you dont have to hack

any of the wiring up either, if you are going with aftermarket amps then run all new wiring and leave all the factory stuff intact.

I meant to post this a few days ago but then had to leave. If you want to instal a new radio and not keep any of the factory stuff crutchfeild will give you plate to put in if you order from them for free or they sell it seperatly for 10-$15.00. What i did for mine was made a panel to go under the radio. I mounted it to a aluminum bracket i made and kept the factory mute button in.
