Head Unit Installation
#1
Okay. I thought it was time to install a new CD player in my car. Its not brand new but i just took it out of my 4runner and the unit is less then a year old. I went to Autozone and bought the little harness and hooked it right up. I turned the car on. The Cd pLayer lit up but there was no sound.
I cant figure out what the hell is wrong. Has any body else had this problem. I have the bose radio and after the installation there were 4 wires left unhooked. The CD player wire. A little dark gray one. And the antenna wires. I haven't hooked the antenna because I need an adapter. Can anybody help my situation. Thanks

Perhaps there is a external amplifier in the system and one of the ant. lead wires is also the turn on wire for the amp?
If you have a old speaker laying around hook it up to the stereo to make sure it works.

Yeah I figured it out for those who care.....The dark grey wire hooks up to a power source built into the bose radio. In order for the powered speakers to work there has to be power going into the grey wire. Which requires a $50 harness from Crutchfield or some source like that. I'll just have a pro install job done on it. Its cheaper then the harness.

Why get a pro to install it? It's rather simple, considering you've bought a harness already. In your harness instructions there shou,ld be labeled two power wirs, 1 is contstant power (stores memory functions etc), and then there is one that only provides power when the ignition is turn from "Off" to "acc" or "on".
Now simply take that dark grey wire which needs to provide power to the amps and splice it into the wire which provides power to the headunit (via the harness) when the key is in the "acc" or "on" position. Therefore whenever the CD player is turned on the amp turns on as well, but the amp won't stay on if you turn the car off.
then again you could just throw money at the pro installers.... If i lived by you i would gladly do it for $50. I'm not sure how pro guys in the audio business do it but most mechanics charge a minimum of 1 hour labor which is generally $60 -$70....so for your one wire you might be spending $60 and they probably won't use a special harness, they'll do what i described (most likely)
anywho lemme know how it goes

Thanks for the offer but the install was only going to be for a month that way I have time to save up for the CD player that I want. By then I wont need it because I am going to replace the amps too.
