You Be The Judge....
I dont really know how to put this and since quite honestly I'm pissed here
it goes. About a month ago I started talking to J & R Racing about
rebuilding/porting my FD's engine. I got a quote of $2500.00 give or take. My
requirements were simple a reliable street port and rebuild nothing fancy, just bare
basics. I tried to make it as clear as possible that money was an issue and
that I needed to know if I had a good rebuildable core.
Fast forward a few weeks and after calling for the 3rd time finally got a
status report from Joe. The engine was supposed to be rebuildable and the only
problem was a front plate. Now heres red flag #1, my $2500 quote was replaced
by a whopping 3900.00 Ok major setback lets try to work around it. At this
point I'm pretty much against a rock and a hard place cause the engine is appart
he already did the porting and has my car sitting at his shop on top of
already having a $1500.00 deposit.
Now last week there was a post on nopistons relating to this that my friend
Alex started but someone else stole. Apparently whoever this was has a problem
with J & R and decided to stick to them while he was there and as a result,
Joe decided that I had something to do with that and therefore opted to not
complete the work. I was getting tired myself and I was also heading in that
direction anyways so it was not a big surprise. Well I here is where it gets
tricky, I had my FD towed back to my house with a completely disassebled engine
stuffed inside. Ok not bad at least I got the car back with a ported engine
that only needs reassembly. If only I should be so lucky, upon close inspection
of the rotor housings, I found cracks around the spark plug holes. At first
I thought, benefit of the doubt...let me call and ask if there might have been
a mistake cause who would waste time porting cracked housings. To my
surprise, it wasnt a mistake it was done deliberately. He was going to assemble my
engine like that charge me close to 4k for it and had to ***** to expect me to
be happy about it like he was doing me a favor...
All I gotta say is yeah, Joe might be happy...after all he made 1500 for
pulling, disassembling and porting my engine. I on the other hand spent over 1800
dropped off a car that was running and ended up with a car with no engine bad
housing and a few parts missing too.
If He had called me after the 2nd week and said, Manny your rotor housings
are cracked I can rebuild them but I wouldnt race it, I would have said ok, lets
settle up I'll pick up my car I cannot afford to go forward at this point.
Sorry for the long, long story but I just cannot believe the kinda **** this
guy was gonna try and pull on me.
thanx for reading,
Manny

Thats why Im gonna do my rebuild and porting myself. It may not be as nice as some of the shops work and it will definately take a lot longer, but it will be a lot harder for me to screw myself over. Though I may still pull it off.

i dunno, joe treats me, my car, and the 4 people that i have reccomended that they take their cars to him like gold.
On top of all of that, your story is totally ******* one sided, all i've heard is good things about J&R. If play ******* hardball with a guy at a shop, he'll do it right back. We've done it at my shop, when a customer says that they want a F355 motor rebuilt for 3 grand, and the headgaskets cost that much at net. We reuse them, too ****** bad
