23 over in a 45 puts you at over 50% over the limit. That's quite a bit. Last sign I saw breaking down the fines would put that at about $400.

Oh, and my two cents on why I personally would fight a ticket, even knowing that I did wrong (never had occasion to do this) is that I am a poor college student. I simply would not be able to afford an extra $150 or whatever out of pocket, nor the increase in insurance that comes with having points on your license. I have no points on my license, and hopefully I will stay that way for a LONG time. I haven't even been pulled over by a cop in 2 years, and don't even remember the last time I got a ticket...
Edit: I know that here in PA, the penalty for doing 30mph over the speed limit (doesn't apply to the above scenario) is loss of license for an indeterminate amt. of time, and you are required to take the safety class to drop you below 6 points (the point at which they suspend your license). If you don't pass the test, you don't get your license back. Also, doubling the speed limit in PA is loss of license for 1 year. Just some random facts.

You don't need to fight tickets with a lawyer. Most of the time if you just go in and talk to the cop that pulled you over, they can reduce the fine/penalty/drop the points, whatever. I have been at the courthouse several times and witnessed drivers who have used this method. They just went in, and either talked to the cop right off the bat (before the judge even came in), or asked the judge for a reduction of the penalty (usually only works if the cop doesn't show up). Court costs of $8 are much better than a $150 ticket. (that's the court cost in PA)
