What Should I Do With My Fd?
#1
I've gotten to the point where I'm just sick of it. I'm tired of motors popping, transmitions breaking, differentials popping, etc etc. It never ends. I've gone through 5 motors. 3 of them this year alone. Each time I broke a apex seal, I had at least one trashed housing, damaged turbines, dented rotors, etc. The only motor that was my fault was the original one. I didn't know much about the car at the time and overheated it when the thermostat stuck. I limped the car home and a broke a coolant seal. The next two went from bad tuning, then I got a bad tank of gas that cost me my 4th motor. Number 5 went on Tuesday. I went to get some food and on the way home got on it. Spiked to about 17 psi and heard it detonate near the top of third. Not sure why yet. The car was very thourougly tuned to 18 psi on pump gas, and was running great. I even had a quart of toluene in the tank for extra safety. I think the problem maybe be in the ignition. Maybe the coils or crank angle sensors. Could be the engine wiring harness itself for all I know. Primary coil was replaced a couple years ago. Other than that, it could be fuel related. I still have my stock 550cc primaries and year old 1680s. Maybe its the fuel pump relay not switching to 12v? Fuel filter ws replaced like 2 months ago. It still runs somewhat decent, but I lost about 4 inches of vacuum. Hopefully just a small chip or crack in an apex seal. I haven't pulled the motor yet cause I am trying to decide what to do. I need to rebuild my second gen first so I have a daily driver. The fd still runs well enough to limp me to the shop and around town if I have to. I don't know if I have the desire to deal with the fd anymore. I love the car, but it is killing me financially. I probably should have bought a supra long ago. Would have saved me from alot of headache both financially and in other ways...

I'm not going to sell my fd for another one. I've been told by many people that mine is one of the most pristine examples they have seen. I have my heart and soul invested in it. Over 30k in mods, etc etc. I've spent way to much time making this fd to my liking.

Do an LS1 swap or sell the FD and buy someone's LS1 powered FD. Imagine . . . reliability, gas mileage, and TORQUE on demand, running 87 octane . . .
The higher PMI, CG and F/R weight issue is moot; everyone knows that aluminum block V8 FCs and FDs kick ***!
The rotary FD is a great car. A supercar, almost. But it is unreliable. You have been pushed to your breaking point . . . so break and choose to keep that world class chassis without the headaches . . . give in to your logical mind and break from the pack of rotary worshippers.

That graph is of Jimlab's punched LT1, but a supercharged LS1 would be very comparable. LS1s power modern Corvettes and F bodies and are highly upgradable. I'm sticking with my NA rotary for my FC . . for now . . . but if I had more time and money, there would be an LS1 / T56 in the garage instead of the 13B.
